To relieve hours at the piano as a music student, I created a garden from plant cuttings I had sourced in night time forays around our Adelaide neighbourhood. Later, living in the Blue Mountains I discovered the world of community gardens and sustainable living, studied horticulture and set up my own gardening enterprise, The Bees Knees.
In conjunction with organisations including Garden of Eden, CERES, Cultivating Community and various local and state government departments, Amadis supported the creation and development of over a dozen community gardens across metropolitan Melbourne. She has also designed numerous private edible gardens, been involved with conferences on food security and urban agriculture, organised and been a guest lecturer on permaculture and sustainable gardening courses.
She continues to advocate for sustainable food production in and around our cities, enjoys the productivity of her own and neighbourhood gardens and writing for publications that celebrate sustainability, nature and culture.
